  • It's a much better idea to use Tor Browser, which routes traffic through 3 random volunteer-run nodes and encrypts just like a VPN would. As long you don't install any extensions or fullscreen the browser, it actually makes you anonymous because none of the nodes know both your identity and the destination. There's no VPN provider to trust not to keep logs, it's a bunch of volunteers, none of whom will ever know who you are and what site you're requesting at the same time, and it's a free and open source software.

    James FlamesJames Flames2 dögum síðan
    • VPNs are only useful for avoiding geo-restrictions or protecting yourself from DOS attacks, they provide no privacy nor anonymity. Also, you could use a proxy for the other two instead of having to pay for a VPN. And if you want privacy, then use Tor, not a VPN.

  • I had to use a VPN just to watch this video. But it's interesting you mentioned assassinations. When Andrei Karlov was assassinated, as part of their investigation of the crime, the Turkish government seized ExpressVPNs servers but they could not get anything out of them because, ExpressVPN apparently doesn't keep logs.

    Don CarlinDon Carlin3 dögum síðan
    • @galeforce3192 That's why I still use them. Trust me I follow the news on all the major VPNs. Not to mention, ExpressVPN works in the UAE still, or at least did on my last visit.

      Don CarlinDon Carlin2 dögum síðan
    • That's because it doesn't keep logs. If you really want to use a VPN, do your research. You'll be surprised at how many VPNs lost customers because news broke out that a government investigation was done of a VPN and, oh, they were keeping logs (HideMyAss comes to mind). Despite the fact that it said they kept logs in their privacy policies. If you don't wanna read all that stuff, look up summaries on review sites. Yes, there are review sites dedicated just to reviewing VPNs.

  • Don’t teach people to protect their data, teach companies not to steal our data.

    Elena PhisherElena Phisher3 dögum síðan
    • That won't work. For companies, it will always be profitable to obtain the public's data, if the public does not go out of it's way to protect themselves. Also, you're taking the personal responsibility out of the individual, by saying you shouldn't teach them to protect themselves, and that it's all the company's fault that their data got leaked. All this will do is make them weaker. Good job!

    • @Internet Explorer Sure, if you can't use Tor due to it being slow for you, then just use a VPN. But were now just arguing over our personal experiences with Tor. I don't think there's any reason to continue this...

      James TrelloJames Trello3 dögum síðan
    • @galeforce3192 Also, you don't gain any privacy when using a VPN (or a proxy). The only reasons to use a VPN are to stop geo-restrictions, protect you from DOS attacks and maybe protect you from your ISP when torrenting. And all of this is something that a proxy could do as well.

      James TrelloJames Trello3 dögum síðan
    • Well, Im living in Spain but browse just about every site from the US. Only major sites haven't banned all countries within the European Union from accessing the most relevant information. Plus, Spain now can lock and/or shut down, nationally, any website or service they don't like without the need for a warrant within minutes or hours (i.e. sites related to Catalonia's independence). Literally like China or Turkey. So the need for an unrestrictive VPN is even more justified. PD: I just tried Tor again. And nope. Starts lagging or buffering from time to time. Takes 8 seconds to load the page and around 15 to load thumbnails and comments. 2-4 seconds with a VPN instead of 15 with Tor or a free proxy... 5$/mo is justified.

      Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer3 dögum síðan
    • @galeforce3192 A free VPN is just a proxy, there's no point to use that over one.

      James TrelloJames Trello3 dögum síðan
    • @James Trello There are VPNs that offer free options. They restrict how much bandwidth you use per month, which technically is a loophole in their no-logs policies, but if you don't want to pay, I'd say that's a fair tradeoff.

  • A technology store sold me a VPN when I bought my laptop. It was €69.99, and when you opened the program you could select 'VPN' or 'WiFi (if I remember correctly) protection'. I chose VPN because the guy at the store told me that, even though you can't use Netflix using a free VPN (which I asked him about) you _could_ using this paid VPN. It sucks so much that I didn't 'return' the product because, obviously, Netflix detected the VPN and my family got scammed out of €70. Even when I tried to reset the program to select the protection, I couldn't.
